Good party guide
The student population in Nottingham is over 55,000 and if every student had a party just once a year that would be 55,000 parties.
That may sound like a lot a fun. However if you have a family, are elderly, have to get up early for work and live next door to students or in a street that has many student houses, this can be a nightmare.
Also if you live in a hall or flat, you must be mindful of other students who may not be attending the party, may have early lectures or are studying for exams etc.
We are not suggesting you can’t have the occasional party but to maintain good relations with your neighbours we strongly recommend you consider the guidance on this page.
If you receive a complaint from your neighbour take it seriously and act on it.
Noise reduction tips
-
remember that other people keep different hours to you
-
keep the bass down
-
close all windows and doors
-
inform all your neighbours (not just the immediate ones) at least 24 hours before having a party, decide a time to finish and stick to this
-
have the party at the weekend
-
in summer if the party starts outside move inside at a reasonable time
-
consider the position of stereos and televisions (not on adjacent walls)
-
when leaving and entering the property ask guests to keep voices down
-
remember you are responsible for the noise and behaviour of your guests
-
if you or your guests use taxis, ask them to use the callback feature rather than beeping their horn
-
try and give your neighbours a contact telephone number in case they have any problems
Take caution - disciplinary process
The University does receive complaints about inappropriate behaviour and noisy parties from students living in the community. These complaints are investigated and appropriate action taken. Normally a visit to explain to the student the implications of their behaviour. Working on a one-to-one basis with the complainant and the alleged perpetrator of the complaint usually resolves the problem, although disciplinary action has been taken in some cases.
