Living in the UK

When you first arrive in the UK the way of life may seem unfamiliar or overwhelming. The International Office provides a dedicated Welcome Programme for all new international students and, together with the International Students' Bureau, will provide information about issues such as:

• extending your visa

Accommodation

At the University, students who are categorised as 'overseas' for fee purposes are entitled to a special guarantee of University accommodation for the first three years of their studies. By guaranteeing accommodation we are able to:

• provide a safe, secure and comfortable environment
• ensure that any dietary, religious or cultural requirements are met

International Students' Bureau

International students at the University automatically become members of the International Students' Bureau  (ISB). The ISB is part of the Students' Union and is run entirely by and for international students.  They organise numerous activities throughout the year catering for most tastes.

Support services

We offer a range of student support services to ensure that the education, physical, personal and spiritual wellbeing of our students is safeguarded.  These services extend across the University from the International Office to the Students' Union, which offers students an extensive range of activities and events for all interests.

The University also ensures students have access to a variety of health and welfare services.

Family life

If you are intending to bring your family to the UK with you, support and information is available on matters such as health services, childcare and schooling in the UK.  There are also a number of schemes designed to make the transition for you and your family into the UK as smooth as possible:

• International Family Link introduces international mature students to Nottingham people who are willing to offer hospitality in their own homes
• Host UK arranges for international students to spend a weekend with an English family at locations around the UK
• family outings and coffee mornings give you and your family the opportunity to meet other people and visit local places of interest
• English language classes for your partner ranging from beginner to intermediate level

English language classes

Our Centre for English Language Education (CELE) offers weekly in-sessional English classes for current international and European students between October and July.  The classes offer non-assessed, non-credit bearing English language support from friendly tutors who help students cope with:

Careers advice

The University of Nottingham has one of the most successful records for graduate employment in the UK. Before returning to your home country you may wish to take advantage of the resources available through the Centre for Career Development.

Life after graduation

The International Office provides a reorientation programme for homeward bound students to make sure that the transition from university into life after graduation is as smooth as possible.

• Alumni ─ The University also has a number of alumni societies that can provide a range of support services and help you to stay in touch your friends and the University
• Post-study work scheme ─  After graduation international students may have the opportunity to stay and work in the UK for up to two years with the post-study work scheme
