American and Canadian Studies covers the history, literature, politics, film and culture of these countries, and their influence on Britain, the rest of Europe and the Americas. Students follow a programme which allows them to focus on or combine subjects such as English, History, Politics, Sociology, Media/Communications Studies or Film.
The Institute of Film and Television Studies is part of the school but draws staff from a number of other schools within the university. It encourages research in issues within the study of film, including production, marketing, distribution, audience studies, political economy, theory and textual analysis.
In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise the School of American Studies was awarded the top grade of 5*.
The School of Biology at the University of Nottingham is one of the UK's leading biology schools, offering degrees in biology, zoology, genetics, human genetics and biochemistry and genetics, as well as a postgraduate taught course in biological photography and imaging. The School of Graduate Entry Medicine and Health is a newly established School within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Based in a new building on the site of Derby City City Hospital, the School accommodates over 120 University staff.
The Graduate Entry Medicine course is an innovative four-year, fast-track programme designed to widen access to medical careers for graduates from a wide range of professional and educational backgrounds. The course is open to UK/EU graduates of any discipline who have obtained or are predicted to obtain a minimum of Bachelors (Honours) classified 2:2 or better. Successful Graduate Entry Medicine students will graduate with degrees in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from The University of Nottingham.

The School of Human Development was formed in September 1997 when the departments of Obstetrics, Midwifery and Gynaecology and Child Health were grouped together.
The school is located on several sites. The largest base is at University Hospital Queen's Medical Centre and there is also significant presence at Nottingham City Hospital and Derby City General Hospital. Additionally, midwifery teachers are based at hospital sites around Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshireand Derbyshire.
Specialisms of the school include child health; midwifery; and obstetrics and gynaecology. The School of Human Developmentis home to NURTURE, one of the UK's leading infertility units.
The School of Humanities comprises six departments: Archaeology, Art History, Classics, Music, Philosophy and Theology and Religious Studies. The Institute provides a focus on the socially responsible use of innovations clinical and biological sciences and their associated technologies, including clinical genetics; the cloning of domesticated animals; functional foods; and the impact of environmental change. The University has long been a centre of excellence in researching these areas and now brings the disciplines of social science, law and the humanities into the arena.

The School of Medical and Surgical Sciences was formed in 1997 by the merger of 15 divisions. The research interests of the School are diverse and include Allergic and Inflammatory Disease, Vascular Disease, Surgery, Neurology and Dermatology. Research within the school is organised around research groups, centres and institutes and includes laboratory based research (for example cell biology, molecular pharmacology and cell signalling), human clinical research (for example Stroke, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Cancer and Therapeutics) and Epidemiological Studies.
