University Park

The University of Nottingham is proud of its extensive landscaped grounds. University Park has always been recognised as one of the best and most attractive university campuses in the UK. Over the years, continued careful management and financial input has created the quality landscape we have at the Campus today.

The overall style of University Park might be described as ‘English Landscape’. Although no area is authentically eighteenth century, it has the main parkland components of:

Landscape

  • rolling grassland
  • individual and clumped trees
  • shrub groups
  • water features
  • long grass 'wild' areas - which encourage biodiversity
  • different plant species from around the world - reflecting the international nature of the University

Green gardening practice

To ensure that the University is one of the greenest, we utilise a variety of organic gardening practices and manage our grounds to encourage biodiversity. These include:

  • utilising garden waste to produce compost and mulching materials
  • minimising the use of pesticides
  • avoiding the use of peat for soil amelioration
  • planting of both native and exotic species

Landscaping

Jubilee Campus

The landscape at Jubilee Campus  is based around three lakes and was designed and is maintained with emphasis on wildlife conservation. This has largely been successful and many different species of waterfowl live on the lakes, including herons.

The meadow area toward the National College of School Leadership was established on the ground-up waste from the previous buildings and supports a wide range of flowering plants, attracting a growing colony of rare blue butterflies.

Sutton Bonington Campus

Over the last 10 years the landscape at Sutton Bonington Campus has been thoroughly overhauled and the plantings in most areas are established and in good condition.  The new landscapes around Food Sciences and Plant Sciences have established well.

There is further work to do at the Campus over the next few years to ensure that all areas of the grounds are of the highest standard, including:

  • replacing borders
  • thinning of tree plantings
  • tree surgery
  • grass maintenance
  • clearer signage to encourage use of certain areas
  • a new footpath through the Arboretum to encourage enjoyment of this collection of native and exotic trees
