Standards

The University is committed to developing low carbon buildings, setting ourselves the ambitious target of BREEAM excellent as a minimum for all new capital projects ─ the most widely used environmental assessment for buildings. This standard ensures that sustainability is included throughout all stages of building development, from design through to post occupancy. This includes:

  • minimising transportation
  • use of recycled materials
  • low energy usage
  • enhancing biodiversity

The recently completed Nottingham Geospatial Building which utilises biomass boiler technology achieved a BREEAM Excellent Award. Current planned developments include the use of:

  • biomass
  • straw bale construction techniques
  • renewable energy technologies

Jubilee Campus

The University has received a number of awards for its green design practices, especially for the new Jubilee Campus . Built on former industrial grounds, the Campus is an outstanding example of brownfield regeneration, sustainability, low energy design and innovative architecture.

Environmental awards

Recent awards for Jubilee Campus include:

  • 1999 ─ Millennium Marquee Award for Environmental Excellence
  • 2001 ─ Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Sustainability Award for Jubilee Campus
  • 2002 ─ Civic Trust Special Award for Sustainability
  • 2005 ─ The Times' Britain's Top 5 Greenest Buildings for Jubilee Campus
  • 2009 ─ Nottingham Civic Society Commendation Award for Jubilee Campus extension
  • 2009 ─ BREEAM EXCELLENT - Nottingham Geospatial Building

Green design

Green features of recent new builds at Jubilee Campus include:

  • rain water harvesting
  • biomass boilers
  • passive design
  • sustainable urban drainage systems
  • geothermal lake source heating

Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies (CSET)

In 2009 the University won first prize in the 'Green Building' category at the Marché International des Professionnels d'Immobilier (MIPIM world's property market) 2009 for the Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies at the Ningbo Campus.

The Centre ─ which carries out research focussing on renewable energy systems ─ is based in an new Eco Building which demonstrates state-of the-art techniques for environmentally responsible, sustainable construction.
