Sustainable transport

The University of Nottingham is committed to improving transport for its staff, students and visitors and promoting more sustainable forms of transport ─ highlighted below are some of the ways in which the University aims to do this.

Hopper bus

The University actively encourages the use of sustainable transport. We are one of the few Universities that operate a free intercampus bus service for both staff and students. This service, which carries more than 750,000 passengers per year, reduces the need for intercampus travel by car.

Public transport

Our Campuses are well served by public transport. The University Card can be used to purchase a number of travel options offered at various discounts to allow unlimited travel on Nottingham City Transport. Purchasing an annual pass will allow students to travel all over the city for as little as 90 pence per day.

Cycling

Nottingham has an extensive cycling network which provides connectivity between our campuses and the city and there are cycle parking facilities at all of our campuses and halls of residence. The University is a key partner in Ucycle ─ Nottingham, launched in 2009 with £3million of funding. This two-year project is to encourage staff, students and visitors to Nottingham’s Universities’ campuses and the Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) to walk and cycle more. The project will provide:

  • new cycle routes and other facilities
  • investment in new services such as bike hire and cycle training
  • tailor-made information on cycling to thousands of students and staff
  • financial incentives including discounts at cycle stores

Staff and students who are interested in starting to cycle can request a Start Cycling pack from Ucycle. They will provide you with maps and support in planning your routes so you are confident on your bike.

Cycle to work schemes

In order to encourage staff to cycle, the University has signed up to two cycle schemes. This enables staff to purchase a bicycle and cycling equipment via salary sacrifice and receive financial savings.

Car share scheme

Whilst we don’t actively encourage the use of the car, we are aware that, for some, it may be unavoidable. The University has teamed up with the UK's largest car sharing network to provide a car share scheme specifically for University staff ─ with links into a similar scheme run at the City Hospital and QMC.  Car sharing can provide an easy way to cut your commuting costs and reduce your carbon footprint.
