Professor David Greenaway took up office as the sixth Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham on October 1 2008. A Professor of Economics, he was previously a Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and founding Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy  in the School of Economics.

Current responsibilities

Professor Greenaway's current and recent public duties include the following:

  • Member of the UK Senior Salaries Review Body
  • Deputy Lieutenant, County of Nottinghamshire
  • Governor of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research

His previous roles include:

  • Chair of the Scientific Advisory Council at the Institut für Weltwirtschaft at the University of Kiel
  • consultant to the World Bank, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the European Commission, the United Nations, General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, and HM Treasury
  • Chair of the Economics and Econometrics Panel for the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2001 and 2008
  • member of the Council of the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
  • Non-Executive Director of the Nottingham Health Authority and Queens Medical Centre Hospital Trust

He is Editor of The World Economy and his research has been published in the Journal of International Economics , Journal of Development Economics, Economic Journal, European Economic Review, Economic Inquiry, Economics Letters, Review of International Economics and Canadian Journal of Economics.

Teaching and research interests

The Vice-Chancellor continues to lecture on a Year One ‘Current Economic Issues’ undergraduate module and supervises PhD students in The School of Economics.

Professor Greenaway's research interests are primarily in:

  • international trade
  • cross border investment
  • trade policy
