Research in the School
The Department of American & Canadian Studies follows an ambitious research strategy. The Department engages in both single and inter-disciplinary research, in the fields of American Studies, Canadian Studies, American literatures, history, thought and culture, and Politics.
Responsive to the transnational agenda in American Studies, Department research focuses on North America itself, on America in the global context and on issues central to inter- and single disciplinary fields.
Research Assessment Excercise
The Department is the strongest unit of its type in the country in terms of 'research power’ rating. According to the latest Research Assessment Exercise, 25 per cent of the Department's returns were judged 4* or 'world-leading' in terms of originality, significance and rigour. A further 20 per cent were of 3* quality ('internationally excellent').
Research community

The Department has an active research culture which consists of a large postgraduate community, visiting scholars, and conferences and symposia.
Humanities and Social Sciences Research Centre
The HSSRC are able to support researchers in locating funding for their projects, developing partners within and beyond academia and enabling the inclusion of technology where appropriate.
