Whilst the library can provide the essential resources for most research, the Department of Archaeology has invested heavily in a series of powerful research tools and provides archaeology postgraduate students with a range of essential primary texts and periodicals, which can be supplemented through the interlibrary loan system. The Department’s lively research culture includes regular research seminars, which offer the chance to hear visiting scholars from elsewhere in the UK and overseas.
Career opportunities
Students are ideally placed to pursue an academic career in the field of archaeology. Our masters courses provide an excellent stepping stone towards further postgraduate study, such as a PhD. Postgraduate qualifications are also highly sought after by employers who feel that graduates are able to demonstrate a deeper and broader knowledge of their subject area, as well as stronger research, communication and organisational skills.
Academic career
Nottingham is a great place to study as a springboard into an academic career. You'll need a PhD from a good university, some teaching experience and, ideally, some research publications.
Our Department provides outstanding support for its research students, many of whom gain valuable teaching experience and publish their research whilst studying with us. Research students are first given the opportunity to lead undergraduate seminars and some, towards the end of their PhD research, have given lecture courses on their area of study.
