Recycling and waste management

Our Environment

We are committed to maintaining our green ethos and in 2011 the University was named Europe's most environmentally friendly in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.

We are now increasing our use of sustainable energy and cutting down on waste, and you can get involved as well, both on campus and in the local community.

On-campus

Here at Nottingham the environment team are working to increase and improve our recycling rates and initiatives. Ther estates website has more information about the recycling services currently offered by the University.

Recycling bring sites

The University has a number of recycling bring sites around the main University campuses. At these sites individuals can recycle

  • cans and tins
  • paper and magazines
  • plastic bottles
  • mixed glass
  • and clothing

Think you could be an eco-warrior?

The environment team are seeking students who are interested in being an eco-warrior for their hall of residence or course/school. This is a great opportunity to raise awareness of environmental issues, help to improve the environmental performance of the University and make a positive difference.

For more information about the role, please email Andrew Bryers  or t: +44 (0)115 951 3568.

The council have provided various means to make sure you are recycling as much as you can and doing your bit to make Nottingham a greener, cleaner place to live.

Grey-lidded bins are provided for recycling and are emptied every two weeks. You can put paper, cardboard, glass, food and drinks cans, tins, plastic bottles and other plastic containers in here but make sure you rinse them first.

Did you know that kitchen waste makes up over 20% of the average Nottingham bin? That’s why the council have provided small food caddies and compostable bags for cooked and uncooked food waste in certain areas of Nottingham. When you get down to your last 4 or 5 compostable bags please let the council know and new bags will be left for you.

If you are recycling as much as you can but are still regularly generating more waste than will fit in the green bin, let the council know and they will try to help.

Unfortunately not all rubbish can be recycled and some waste needs to be disposed of differently. Currently, around 80% of the waste collected in green bins is taken to Eastcroft incinerator which is burnt to generate hot water for thousands of surrounding properties. The remaining 20% is buried at a landfill site. The aim is to reduce this percentage further – so do your bit and get recycling!

You could get a £100 fine if you leave your bin out longer than necessary. Remember your bin day and work out a rota with your housemates. To find out when your bin day is, please visit the Nottingham City Council website.

For enquiries about extra facilities, compostable bags, free waste collection or for further information please call the Nottingham City Council on  t: +44 (0)115 915 2000 who will be able to help.
