Biography
Gillian Perkins is the Course Leader for Fine Art and Art Theory, within the School of Education, which encompasses the practice, theory and history of art.
Teaching subjects include drawing, contextual studies, research issues in the practice and theory of art, professional development, and women's art.
Professional practice
For many years, Gillian's art practice has explored ideas of relationship between people and landscape, questioning perceptions of ancient objects from a distance. This relationship is considered in terms of their obscure meaning and the need to view them through frames of our own making. Working predominantly in paint but also print, photography and mixed media, recent work has also explored the interwoven relationship of people struggling to create a distance, and thereby enabling different frames of reference.
Gillian has exhibited regularly in the Midlands and in Holland and Italy. She is a member of a professional artist group 'Loughborough Artspace'. Theoretical research interests include sociological, psychological and cultural factors in the lives of art students that impact on the development of their art practice, with a particular interest in women. She has given papers at several major national conferences and has articles published in "2001 - A Spatial Odyssey" (2001); "Life's Rich Pattern: Cultural Diversity and the Education of Adults" (2002); and "Enhancing Curricula" (2002).
