Welcome to the Department of German

With an excellent national and international reputation for teaching and research, we offer a first-class environment for undergraduate and postgraduate study. We are part of a thriving School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies, one of the largest in the country, with a lively student community. An active French & German society organizes regular social events and visits to German and Austrian cities. Students also put on a German play each year and produce a German-language newspaper.  We combine a challenging core curriculum in German language with a very wide range of options in Germanic Studies to suit students’ individual strengths and interests, including:

  • literature
  • film
  • media
  • history
  • philosophy
  • linguistics
  • Dutch
  • politics

Our German language curriculum develops students' skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing, and all students are taught by native speakers for conversation.

For the Year Abroad , supported by a dedicated year Abroad team, our students can choose a work placement, a language teaching assistantship, or to study at a German or Austrian university.
