Entry requirements

Academic requirements

Below is an approximate guide to entry requirements for students from India for admission to The University of Nottingham at the following levels.

Foundation

Only students who have taken the wrong subjects for their chosen degree course in their class 12 exams will be considered for a foundation programme. An overall percentage of 75% or above is required for entry.

For further information about our foundation options, please visit our undergraduate prospectus.

Find out how to apply.

Undergraduate

Class 12 or Standard 12 (10+2) examinations from CBSE, ISCE or a state board are acceptable for admission onto our bachelors programmes. We will generally ask for the best of four subjects, and any subject-specific requirements will reflect the overall percentage required (eg. 85% in best four subjects including 85% in Maths).

Students who have taken a 3 year diploma after class 11 instead of the class 12 exams can be considered for second year entry to our bachelors programmes.

Typical offers for a course requiring A level grades of AAA / AAB would be:

  • ISC – 85%
  • CBSE and some State Boards – 80%
  • West Bengal – 70%
  • Jammu and Kashmir – 90%
  • Gujarat Board – 90%

70% in Year 12 English can be considered as meeting the minimum English language entry requirement, although some courses may ask for a higher grade.

We do not accept the local language as one of the four subject grades on which we base an offer, and many schools also exclude Environmental Education from offer grades.

Students taking A levels or the IB should refer to the online undergraduate prospectus for entry requirements.

Students taking APs or SATIIs should refer to entry requirements for the USA.

Masters

Our Taught Masters programmes with a UK 2:1 entry level require an Indian bachelors degree with a minimum of 60% average from a recognised institution.

Some flexibility may be given for Delhi University students who take Arts subjects, and for selected Law programmes including those from Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Govt Law College, Kolkata, NALSAR, NLSIU, ILS and Amity Law School - in these cases, 55% is normally acceptable for courses which require a UK 2:1 equivalent.

For students from institutions which use a GPA system out of 10, we typically ask for a 6.0/10 minimum, although for Amity Business School a GPA of 6.5/10 is required.

For more information, please see our postgraduate prospectus.

PhD & research

A masters and bachelors degree from a recognised University are usually required for PhD entry, although exceptional students may be considered for PhD entry without a masters qualification.

The typical minimum requirement from Indian universities is a 60% average.

For all research degrees, we recommend that you make initial enquiries with a potential supervisor or the relevant University of Nottingham school / department before applying.  A research proposal is required when submitting your application.

For more information, please see our postgraduate prospectus.

Recognition of UK Masters Degrees

Recently a small number of Indian graduates have faced issues around the recognition of their one year UK masters degree in India for progression to PhD study.
This is only an issue for certain state universities and government organisations - private universities are not affected.

The British Council has established a task force with BIS/UUK/QAA and various Indian bodies to lobby for the recognition framework to be based on recognition of learning outcomes as opposed to length of degree.
It's hoped that the UK's one year masters will be fully recognised by the start of the 2013 academic year (and that recognition will apply retrospectively).

If you have any questions please contact your country contact.

English language requirements

To study at Nottingham, you will need to demonstrate a required level of English language proficiency. In addition to the more common language qualifications - such as IELTS, TOEFL, (I)GCSE, O level, IB and A and AS level English - the University also considers a number of other English language qualifications for admission.

English language courses

Our Centre for English Language Education (CELE) offers a range of English language courses.

These courses are designed to prepare international students with the required language skills for academic study at The University of Nottingham.
