MA in Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting

The MA in Chinese/English Translation and Interpreting was introduced in 2007. We are now in our third year and have a lively group of 9 students studying full-time. They come from China, Canada, Spain, Taiwan and Macao.

Some of our graduates have gone on to work in local industry, two of last year's graduates are working in Nottingham, using their translation and interpreting skills.  Others have gone one to do further qualifications in interpreting, in the UK and elsewhere. Still others have returned to prestigious posts in their countries of origin, mainly in China.

The MA has been designed to provide a grounding for aspiring professional translators and interpreters working in English and Mandarin Chinese in:

  • Translation Theory
  • Technological Tools for Translators
  • Translation of a wide variety of types of source text relevant to the commercial cultural environments
  • Bi-lateral Interpreting

Students whose level of English or Chinese would benefit from further study will take modules in Chinese or English for Professional Purposes. This involves advanced writing and textual analysis. We also offer grounding in the conventions of academic writing which apply in the British system for students unfamiliar with these norms.

Most of our students are native or near-native speakers of Mandarin Chinese who have a very high level of competence in English. We also recruit applicants who are native or near-native speakers of English with a very high level of competence in Mandarin Chinese.

Students who are interested have the opportunity of studying another language as part of their MA, either as complete beginners or from a higher level, if they have previous experience. We offer the major European languages, plus Japanese and Arabic.

We provide work experience opportunities in translation/interpreting and the British business environment, in collaboration with the Arts Graduate Centre and other external agencies, as appropriate.
