Postgraduate courses and research opportunities

The Department of Philosophy at Nottingham is a centre of research excellence – a fact that has been confirmed by the latest independent Research Assessment Excercise (RAE 2008). Outstanding success for Nottingham postgraduates

PhD students at The University of Nottingham are among the most successful in the country, according to a new report. Nottingham is ranked joint second in England on a measure of PhD completion rates, in a report that underlines the quality of its postgraduate education and the support available to doctoral students.

Data released by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) shows that 88 per cent of full-time Home and EU doctoral students at the University qualified within seven years. Read full article...

Postgraduate programme

Nottingham offers a focused taught MA in Philosophy programme and expert supervision for philosophy MPhil/PhD courses. We have a lively and successful postgraduate programme, with students working on a range of projects that reflect the Department's areas of expertise. 

The student environment

We provide a supportive and friendly environment for students, with dedicated working space, teaching opportunities, a weekly research seminar and postgraduate seminar. The Department also hosts regular conferences and workshops.

Our graduates regularly give papers at conferences and have been successful in obtaining publications and securing lecturing posts in good universities.

The University's campuses are considered to be some of the most attractive of any university in the UK, and Nottingham city is a lively multicultural community with some of the best sports, leisure and entertainment facilities.

Nottingham is an excellent place to study as a springboard into an academic career, for which you'll need a PhD from a good university, some teaching experience and, ideally, some research publications.

Our Department provides excellent support for its research students, many of whom gain valuable teaching experience and publish their research whilst studying with us. Research students are first given the opportunity to lead undergraduate seminars and some, towards the end of their PhD research, have given lecture courses on their area of study.
