As recognised by the last two Research Assessment Exercises (2001 (5*), 2008 (top rank)) we have an excellent research culture in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies.
Research Culture
Our research culture has two layers: staff and postgraduates. We organise our research within Research Clusters and Research Centres or Projects. Many of our postgraduates are actively involved in the Clusters and Institutes and most staff belong to more than one research initiative.
Staff Research
We have leading experts on Cuban history and politics, Latin American twentieth-century literature, the Falklands-Malvinas conflict, the Landless Movement in Brazil, critical theory, women’s writing in Spain and Latin America, Iberian Renaissance studies, Spanish nineteenth and twentieth century literature and early career researchers working on Portuguese and Lusophone literature and cinema, Spanish twentieth-century history, Brazilian slave culture, Golden Age literature and art, and Iberian twentieth-century literature and politics. Postgraduate Research
Our postgraduates are working on topics ranging from Cuban culture and history, Brazilian popular culture, Portuguese media and the Carnation Revolution, Lorca, Pessoa, Water Policy in Angola, Sixteenth and Seventeenth-century Spanish Literature and art, comic strips in Spain and Cuba, Colombian women’s writing and testimonial writing in Latin America.
