Why study abroad?

Employers are increasingly placing value on overseas experience when looking for potential employees. To enhance the employability of its graduates and give them the invaluable experience of living and studying in a foreign country, The University of Nottingham has an extensive range of exchange opportunities to offer its undergraduate students.

Opportunities for undergraduates

Erasmus European exchange

The Erasmus programme is a European Commission initiative where student exchange agreements can be made between universities and businesses across Europe.  Most academic schools at The University of Nottingham have student Erasmus European exchange agreements which provide students with the opportunity to take part of their University of Nottingham degree at a partner institution in Europe.

  • The University has over 200 partners across Europe
  • There are partner universities in 39 countries
  • Approximately 180 students take study abroad on the scheme each year

Students can also undertake work placements as part of the Erasmus scheme and also receive funding from the EU.

Universitas 21 worldwide exchanges

The University of Nottingham is a founder member of Universitas 21, an international network of research active intensive universities that see increasing value in working collaboratively.  Through Universitas 21 you may be able to study at one of our partner universities in the following countries.

School exchanges 

There are also other school exchanges outside the Erasmus and Universitas 21 schemes. These are coordinated by the relevant Academic School.  These include the opportunity to study in:

  • the US ─ with the schools of American and Canadian Studies, Biology and Chemistry
  • Cuba, Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Brazil ─ with Hispanic and Latin American Studies 

Summer programmes and short-term projects

In addition to the option of studying abroad for a semester or full academic year, there are many other opportunities for students to spend time abroad. 

Universitas 21

The Universitas 21 network offer the following options during the summer for individuals or groups of students.

International summer campuses and projects

Students can also take part in international summer campuses and international projects, examples of which are listed below.

  • Global Village Project in Jordan
  • Youth Leadership for Global Governance course
  • Summer campuses in Korea and China

Malaysia and China inter-campus exchange

If you are studying for a degree at The University of Nottingham which is also offered at one of our campuses in either China or Malaysia, you will have the opportunity to spend up to a year of your degree studying at one of these campuses.

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus

  • Students at our Malaysian Campus have the opportunity to take one or two semesters of the second year of their degree programme at Nottingham
  • Students at our UK campuses who are taking degree programmes that are also available in Malaysia can apply to take one or two semesters in Malaysia

The University of Nottingham Ningbo, China

  • Students at our Ningbo Campus have the chance to join join a summer school in Nottingham at the end of the third year of their degree
  • Students at our UK campuses who are studying a degree programme available at Ningbo, or taking Chinese Studies as part of their degree, can choose to spend a period of study in China

The Malaysia and China Campuses offer UK students the opportunity to live overseas while studying in an English language university and following a curriculum that follows similar pathways to Nottingham.
