Lord Dearing Awards
The Dearing Award Scheme has, since 1999, recognised the outstanding achievements of University of Nottingham staff in enhancing the student learning experience.
Nominations invited for 2012
How many awards are granted?
Each year up to twenty awards are made to individuals or teams who are nominated by students and/or Schools and Departments.
Who is eligible to receive an award?
The scheme recognises that staff contribute to the learning environment in many different ways, and it has therefore been developed to encompass staff at different stages of their career and who are delivering a wide range of learning opportunities and support.
The following examples indicate some of the different contributions which fall within the scheme:
-
Applies to newly appointed staff as well as very experienced staff;
-
Applies to all staff at the University who contribute to the learning environment;
-
Can relate to all forms of teaching/teaching support lectures, seminars, tutorials, fieldtrips, practicals, research degree supervision, e-learning etc;
-
Recognises different types of excellence achieved through innovative practices or through high quality provision in a specialist area.
What criteria are used in the assessment of nominations?
A judging panel appointed by Teaching and Learning Board, and including student representatives, will make recommendations for awards based on the nomination evidence and using the criteria listed below:
-
Excellence in supporting student learning;
-
Evidence of stimulating and inspiring student learning;
-
Recognition and support of diverse student learning needs;
-
Supporting colleagues in the promotion of student learning;
-
A serious and ongoing commitment to review and reflection to enhance individual practice;
-
Clear evidence of the impact on the quality of the student learning experience
What do I need to do if I am nominated?
There are two actions you need to take:
-
Referees
You will be asked to supply the names of two referees. The referees must have personal knowledge of the contributions you have made to the enhancement of student learning. Referees can be University staff, current or past students or external colleagues. The referee statements are an important part of the application.
-
Personal statement
The judging panel will need details of your approach and the activities you have introduced which have improved student learning and / or the learning environment.
Once a nomination is received the member of staff concerned will be contacted and asked to submit brief details as follows:
-
The measures you have taken to improve teaching / support of teaching, learning and / or assessment of students with a summary of supporting evidence. The evidence should include, where possible, feedback from students such as SET results, student comments and / or indications of improvements in assessment and / or performance.
-
A statement about your overall approach to improving student learning.
-
Details of publications which describe the enhancements you have made.
How should the personal statement be presented?
The judging panel are only interested in the content of your personal statement, not the cosmetic design of the documents. You are therefore advised to avoid pictures, graphics and complicated layouts which do not add to the quality of your statement.
Support evidence via video submission
Applicants are now offered the option of supplementing their submissions with short video clips which illustrate their approach to learning and teaching. This option was introduced to enable nominees to provide a fuller set of evidence in support of their written application and might be particularly useful to illustrate elements of a submission which are difficult to capture in words.
Nominees are encouraged to make a video submission, but there is no requirement to go through a formal interview and filming process. The panel is not looking for high quality, professionally produced videos but rather ones that capture something about the individual contribution, perhaps in creative and eye-catching ways.
The preferred method is via electronic submission to molly.fleischer@nottingham.ac.uk in one of the following formats:
.doc / .docx
.rtf
.pdf
If you are also submitting supplementary video evidence, please use .wmv format.
Submissions should be a maximum of 4 sides of A4. Please note that any appendices or extra information submitted will not be made available to the Judging Panel.

Lord Dearing Fellowships
The Lord Dearing Fellowships, lauched in 2010, aim to support academic staff teaching projects centred on areas identified in the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy (LTAS) for one academic year and across all campuses.
Calls for nominations for 2012 - 2013 will be announced in the Spring term.

Teaching and Learning Strategic Fund
Projects funded by the Teaching and Learning Strategic Fund are based on one or more of the University’s strategic areas for development. A list of currently funded projects can be seen on the Projects page.
No calls for funding at this point.
National Teaching Fellowships
The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) is run by the Higher Education Academy to recognise and reward excellence in teaching and the facilitation of learning at a national level. Up to 55 awards of £10,000 are made to support the Fellow’s teaching development activities.
Nominations for the NTFS
The University can nominate 3 individuals who are outstanding in their support of the student learning. A notice will be circulated to Heads of School to start the internal selection process.
Nottingham’s NTFS winners
This year, two of our staff received Fellowship awards: Dr Martin Luck in Biosciences and Dr Gordon Ramsay in English Studies.
Martin incorporates the principles of research-informed teaching into his work and engages students in finding the “limits of confident knowledge”. He has found that by peering over the edge and making discoveries, students learn that knowledge is ephemeral, understanding is provisional and progress in challenging.
Gordon places his students at the centre of his teaching with his focus on developing their confidence to build and express their own opinions alongside an ability to listen and engage with the idea of others in the group and the literature. His philosophy is reflected in his attempts to blur the boundaries of university and wider world.
Chancellor Awards
Each School may make an award to a student-nominated member of staff on each campus on which it is active (ie a School active on the UK, Malaysia and Ningbo campuses can make three awards).
The criteria for the award relate specifically to contributions made by staff to the quality of teaching within a school; there is no particular emphasis on enhancement or innovation. APM staff in a School contributing to teaching quality through their active support for teaching are also eligible for the award.
Students will be asked to make nominations via their LCF; the final decision on the winner(s) of the award will be made by the Head of School with input from students via the School’s Learning Community Forum or Fora.
This year's deadline for nominations will be Friday, 8 June 2012.
